The first meeting was informative, and representatives of the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors, the Library Trustees, as well as our beloved Marianne, outgoing Branch Librarian were on hand to answer questions.
Active positions for the Friends of the Scottsville Library were filled as follows:
President: Laurel Greene
Vice President: Maria Morrell
Treasurer: Stotts Reele
Recording Secretary: Dolores Rogers
Publicity Chair Kirsten Miles
Other volunteer positions will be communicated as the Friends group evaluates our needs and meets with the incoming Branch Librarian. One position of note is a seat on the JMRL Board of Trustees. The position will come available when the term of Tony Townsend is up in 2011. Interested parties are encouraged to submit a resume. This is a chance during a significant time in the history of our library, for Southern Albemarle to be represented on the Library Board of Trustees. The Trustees welcome a member from our area. The board meets once a month, plus a few extra events, and much of the work is done by e-mail. Marianne Ramsden has volunteered to attend meetings on behalf of the Friends for now.
The Friends of the JRML has a board, and that organization serves all county libraries. Lilian Schafft has enjoyed serving before, and feels it is helpful for Scottsville to have a member on that board, as it keeps us in touch with funds that may be available.
Lindsay Dorrier was asked to speak on the “Dorrier Plan”
The Local library budget is approximately $177,000 and Virginia residents use the library with proof of residency. He proposed to bring the Scottsville Library into the Regional Agreement by requesting funding from Buckingham and Fluvanna Counties to offset the 25-28% of the library circulation which they currently represent, in order for their residents to have free access to the JMRL library resources. Other ideas were to charge for out of county library cards.
The Dorrier Plan supports level funding from Albemarle County provided:
1) Funding is acquired from Fluvanna and Buckingham Counties
2) Scottsville Library Friends group is rejuvenated
3) JMRL services evaluated to verify that the county is getting the efficiency and value for the 60% of the city library budgets it pays for
Evelyn Edson is a Fluvanna county user, and volunteered to attend the Fluvanna County Board of Supervisors meeting with Dorrier. Participation by other Fluvanna users is welcome. The concept of corporate sponsorship will be explored to offset the difficult budgets these counties already face.
Tony Townsend pointed out that attending the County Board meetings is sometimes the only way to learn directly of plans that affect the library. It is helpful to have volunteers to attend board meetings.
Current Branch Librarian Marianne Ramsden has been offered 20 boxes of books by JMRL for a September local book sale with all funds remaining in the Scottsville Library Friends Treasury. The books need to be moved within the next couple of weeks, from Gordon Avenue library. We can spend the end of school year and summer on a local book drive, and open the Book Sale in September as school begins.
Treasurer Stotts Reel asked that patron residence information be kept current annually instead of every three years.
Vice President Maria Morrell suggested that funds should currently go to promoting our library at Fluvanna and Buckingham County Board meetings.
The Friends group will work with the new Branch Librarian to develop a wish list for funds, and reassess quarterly. Fundraisers will be developed as needs are brought forward.
Several sign-up sheets were available for further volunteer positions, and are at the Scottsville Library. Positions will be posted to the blog as well.
Lillian Schafft spoke about the long-lived Primary School literacy program which has “published” works from young authors in the library from Scottsville and Yancy Elementary Schools. This important program has been expanded to include Red Hill Elementary school. Public readings and a $10 gift card to Barnes and Noble are awarded as encouragement. More volunteers will be needed to support the increased activity with the new school. Currently Lillian and Laurel manage the program, time outlays are not tremendous, but some new people will be needed to manage the program.
The Friends of the Scottsville library thanks all participants for volunteering their time on a lovely Saturday afternoon. Future meetings will be announced as the group meets with the incoming Branch Librarian.
